About Ross

Ross is arguably one of the few respected Traditional Fiddle players and tutors in Scotland.  His experience and ability is founded in his innate talent for fiddle playing.  Ross started playing the fiddle when he was age five, at which time he was introduced to classical style and playing.  His talent for Scottish Traditional music was recognised early in his formative years and influenced profoundly by one of the great exponents of fiddle playing Douglas Lawrence a former pupil of the great Hector McAndrew.  Ross went on to benefit from lessons from Dougie, which continues to this date. During this period Ross competed and was successful in many fiddle competitions.

Ross has also played in many bands and for a three year period turned professional and played the folk scene all over Scotland, performing at many venues ranging from Celtic connections to radio performances.  Demands grew on his tutoring requirements and in 2000 he turned full time to teaching Scottish Traditional fiddle playing and is currently in great demand for both private and workshop tutoring.  His current portfolio includes both the Glasgow and Falkirk fiddle workshops.

This transition has also allowed Ross to pursue his competition work and in 2003 he was invited to compete in the prestigious Glenfiddich fiddle championship at Blair castle, where he joined eight of the top fiddlers.  On this occasion Ross was pleased to win the Charles Gore prize for the 'Best Newcomer'.  More recently in 2004 Ross again received an invitation to the Glenfiddich event and went on to win first place and is honoured to be the Glenfiddich fiddle champion for 2004.

A big thank also goes to Morag MacCaskil for a faultless accompaniment.  Ross continues to perform at various venues and gigs and has recently completed a tour with Iain Morrison, details can be found by checking out 'Ross's Links'.  "It is true that all great fiddle players bring to playing a creativity which makes them stand out from others, this individuality is recognised in Ross who is a fiddle player for the new generation".          Photos courtesy of 'Glenfiddich'.
